Zusammenfassung
After its introduction in the 1950s, the semantic differential (SD) received enormous attention among psychologists and other social and behavioral scientists. Especially during the 1960s, its methodological details and possible fields of application were broadly and critically discussed. In 1969, David R.J. Heise reports more than 1000 papers on SD – a huge amount given the publication rates of that time. A good deal of this attention might be due to its promise to ‘repair’ a vital defect of behaviorist thinking, its smart use of factor analysis (a fashionable method at that time), and its connectivity to prominent debates on meaning in linguistics and philosophy of language. Especially Charles E. Osgood's claim for a universal structure of meaning in the EPA (evaluation, potency, and activity) structure points to the heart of the debate on semantic relativism. In the early 1970s, behaviorism lost its position as the leading paradigm of psychology whereas cognitivism gained increased attention. The interest in the SD decreased. Still, SD joined the group of standard scaling techniques during the 1980s and 1990s. Today, it is applied by many disciplines worldwide, such as psychology, sociology, linguistics, marketing research, etc.
