Zusammenfassung
The proportion of older people in forensic institutions and prisons has increased in recent decades. This is associated with special challenges. The aim of the present study was to identify and summarize relevant findings from the last ten years on these groups of people. The study focused on sociodemographic and criminological characteristics, and the health status of older offenders in forensic hospitals and the correctional system. A systematic literature search was conducted, and 32 studies were selected.
In most studies, the age cutoff for older individuals was 50+ years. The majority of individuals included in the studies were White and African American, single, divorced, or separated. Low socioeconomic status was common. Serious (violent) offenses were frequently reported as the reason for incarceration or placement. Older prisoners or those housed in forensic hospitals often have severe psychological and physical health conditions.
This work shows that action is required to meet the needs of the increasing population of older persons in prison and forensic hospitals.
