Zusammenfassung
The term "apraxia" has been used to describe many different problems related to impairments of skilled movements. The apraxias present themselves as a conglomerate of major syndromes with different facets of motor cognitive disabilities affecting the selection, the specification, and/or the production of skilled movements. This chapter focuses on limb apraxia as a motor cognitive disorder that can occur with varying reported incidence rates and severity in developmental disorders as well as acquired neurological or psychiatric diseases, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, dementia, Parkinson's disease, corticobasal syndrome, Huntington's disease, multiple sclerosis, and schizophrenia. Limb apraxia can affect activities of daily living, ranging from communicative gesturing to the actual use of novel and familiar tools and objects. Most frequently and in severest forms, limb apraxia has been described after damage to the left hemisphere of the brain or in patients with dementia with incidence rates varying between 30% and 50%.
