Self-critique & the crisis of identity within sociology are discussed. Following a brief review of the different forms of sociological practice & the problems of demonstrating achievement, the role of sociology in the postmodern age is discussed. The trend is toward deconstruction: sociology must deal with a multiplicity of cognitive elements that can be combined in many different ways, & the boundaries between macro- & microperspectives are becoming blurred. Differing forms of theory -- eg, ethnomethodology, the theory of autopoietic systems, stucturation theory, constructivism, & situational logic -- are breaking new ground, & offer the possibility for fruitful discussion & for sociology to regain its own & the public's esteem.
