The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between language features of the group dialogue and therapeutic factors in a group therapy for eating disorder patients. 42 verbatim protocols of a group treatment were investigated. Emotion/abstraction patterns were identified for the group as a whole by means of computer-assisted text analysis. In addition, therapeutic factors were rated by external judges and topics in group dialog were categorized. Significant positive relationships were found between high group interaction and the topic Family Bonds. The discussion of issues related to family bonds, friendship and partnership frequently took place in a narrative form. The topic self-concept showed up in text sections, in which emotion and abstraction were high (connecting-segments). The method of emotion/abstraction patterns allows to operationalise the assumptions of psychodynamic models to the treatment of eating disorder patients in group setting.
