This chapter discusses how the phase behavior of monolayers is modified in the presence of substrate potentials with different geometries. It focuses on the phase behavior of colloidal particles confined to two dimensions subject to an external periodic potential, which for example can be realized by interfering laser beams, periodic pinning arrays, and imprint or stamping techniques. Ordering phenomena in 2D systems are richer and sometimes even genuinely different from the corresponding 3D systems. Most atomic substrate potentials have two-dimensional (2D) periodicity. The chapter explains the ordering phenomena in 2D colloidal systems which arise in the presence of a one-dimensional (1D) periodic potential. It reviews the theoretical work on this subject, which is then followed by a discussion of the experimental results. The chapter talks about commensurate structures, where the periodicity of the adsorbate is a multiple of the lattice constant of the substrate.
