Zusammenfassung
Pica disorder can have strong, burdensome effects on the quality of life both of the affected individuals and of those close to them. Pica behavior is relatively common, especially among children, persons with intellectual disabilities, and pregnant women and in some African communities within or outside of Africa. Reported prevalence rates vary widely and seem to decline with age. Etiological mechanisms are not yet understood. Consequently, effective treatment methods which target the etiological mechanisms and thus minimize the risks associated with and reduce pica behavior are scarce. Research focusing on treatment methods proposes combinations of mainly reinforcement-based techniques, whereas punishment-based techniques should only be applied as a last resort. Randomized controlled trials need to be conducted to further investigate the effects of promising methods which include non-contingent reinforcement, differential reinforcement, and environmental enrichment on an empirical basis.
