Abstract
Within this thesis erbium-doped up-converters have been characterized and applied to silicon solar cells. An up-converter absorbs at least two low energy photons and converts them to one high energy photon and therefore, when applied to the rear of a bifacial solar cell, may lead to a spectral response beyond the absorption range of the solar cell. Within this thesis, this has been demonstrated using four different kinds of erbium doped host materials as up-converters. The host materials investigated were barium chloride, yttrium oxide, sodium yttrium fluoride and a commercial up-conversion powder (IRUCG), also consisting of sodium yttrium fluoride, but co-doped with ytterbium and erbium. Barium chloride and yttrium oxide based up-converters have been applied for the first time to solar cells.
