Zusammenfassung

How can economic anthropology contribute to the study of management? This chapter gives an overview of where we might locate management conceptually in the context of economic regimes. Then it discusses management practices in and beyond the economic realm. It identifies four areas in which management practices can play a decisive role and that deserve our attention: wealth and risk management, new public management and bureaucracy, management of the self, anthropological knowledge in management studies and practices. These areas illustrate how management is not simply something that is found in firms, but also is something that plays a critical role in public administration, the governance of the self and the history of science. In putting them forward, the chapter hopes to stimulate future research in anthropology on management as a mode of governing people or things in accordance with economic ideas and rationales.
