Abstract
Rudolf Carnap is a classic proponent of the ideal language school within analytic philosophy. He has divided opinion more sharply than other representatives of this tradition and thus contributed decisively to the ongoing separation of analytic and Continental philosophy. The essay “The Elimination of Metaphysics through Logical Analysis of Language” (Carnap 1931, 1959), in particular, contributed to the polarization because it made Martin Heidegger, the classic author of Continental philosophy, the target of exercises in a logically inspired criticism of metaphysics.
