In the framework of the international study 'Media construction of national identities in the changing state structures of post-war Europe' the Austrian press reporting of a newspaper of high prestige ('Die Presse'), a regional paper ('Salzburger Nachrichten'), a party´s paper ('Arbeiterzeitung') and a yellow press paper ('Neue Kronen Zeitung') was analysed. The sample comprised political messages, editorials, reports and comments, which were published between 1946 and 1995 on days of national relevance (end of war, state contract, neutrality). Themes, like the relationship between Austria and Germany, patriotism, historical aspects, the military, multiculturalism, (economical) internationalism, the creation and content of national identities, and neutrality were grasped, thereby.
The evaluation, done by the aid of Latent Class Analysis, showed that the reporting of the different newspapers was mostly homogeneous although the prestige paper's reporting seems to be more detailed than the yellow press coverage.
Zusammenfassung in einer weiteren Sprache
Im Rahmen des internationalen Forschungsprojektes 'Media construction of national identities in the changing state structures of post-war Europe' wurde die österreichische Presseberichterstattung in einer Prestigezeitung ('Die Presse'), einer Regionalzeitung ('Salzburger Nachrichten'), einer Parteizeitung ('Arbeiterzeitung') und einer Boulevardzeitung ('Neue Kronen Zeitung') analysiert. Die Stichprobe umfasste politische Nachrichten, Leitartikel, Berichte und Kommentare, die zwischen 1946 und 1995 an national relevanten Tagen (Kriegsende, Staatsvertrag, Neutralität) erschienen. Erfasst wurden die Themenbereiche österreichisch-deutsche Beziehungen, Patriotismus, historische Aspekte, Militär, Multikulturalismus, (wirtschaftlicher) Internationalismus, Produktion und Inhalte nationaler Identitäten und Neutralität.
Es ergab sich mit Hilfe der Latent-Class-Analyse, dass die Berichterstattung in den verschiedenen Zeitungen in der Überzahl homogen ist. Ansonsten scheint vor allem die Prestigezeitung differenzierter und das Boulevardblatt undifferenzierter zu berichten.
