Zusammenfassung

In this study we analyzed the relations between economic strain, supportive parenting, and adolescents' future orientation and the impact of future orientation on adolescents' academic achievement. We used cross-sectional data from the German Socioeconomic Panel (2001-2005; n = 1598, 17 years old adolescents and their parents). Results of the structural equation modeling showed: Perceived parental economic strain and supportive parenting are negatively correlated and mediate the influence of the objective economic hardness on adolescents' future orientation. Furthermore, adolescents' future orientation is a strong predictor of their academic achievement. Implications for theory and policy interventions are discussed.
