Exploiting Facebook, Flickr, and Picasa : Utilizing Photo Sharing Websites as Cloud Storage Backends

2013, Miller, Wolfgang

A major application of cloud computing is to supply storage that is often advertised by providers as being reliable, available, functional, and cost efficient because it relies on a massive infrastructure available in the cloud. Photo sharing websites rely on similar infrastructures to handle the amount of uploaded image data; however, in contrast to conventional cloud storage providers, they offer free storage capacities for images. Due to the fact that images can be used as data containers to store arbitrary information, it is possible to exploit these services as free cloud storage. In this thesis we describe our approach for the development of a fully functional photosharing website driven cloud storage system based on twelve encoding approaches. These encoding approaches allow for adjusting our system to the requirements of a specific photo sharing website and to gain the best trade-off between the actual data ratio of an image and its robustness against image compression. The system’s performance has been tested with the three major photo sharing websites Facebook, Flickr, and Picasa Web Albums, and has been compared with Amazon’s professional cloud storage service AWS S3. The results show that the system can be an alternative in scenarios in which the overall performance is not that important, such as backup systems. Our developed photosharing website driven cloud storage system is accessible as an open source and implemented as part of the widely used jClouds framework.

Integrating Classical Sindarin Morphology and Syntax using XFST and XLE

2008, Zink, Thomas, Engl, Andreas, Miller, Wolfgang

Sindarin is a constructed language invented by the author and linguist J.R.R. Tolkien. It is the language spoken by the Elves. Though the number of complete sindarin sentences is rather limited[1] enough information is available to derive syntactic rules and build a Sindarin grammar. This project aims at modelling the basics of Classi- cal Sindarin grammar in LFG using Xerox XLE system. In addition it interfaces to Xerox XFST to lookup morphological information which has already been implemented in another project. For more information about Classical Sindarin morphology see the project documentation[2]. The project is mainly based on information provided by David Salo’s ”A Gateway to Sindarin”

Utilizing Photo Sharing Websites for Cloud Storage Backends

2013, Graf, Sebastian, Miller, Wolfgang, Waldvogel, Marcel

Cloud Storages combine high availability with the unences- sity to maintain any own infrastructure and all-time availability. A wide field of different providers offer a flexible portfolio for any technical need and financial possibility. Yet, the possibilities of different cloud storage providers have all one issue in common: Basic storage is cheap whereas the costs increase with the storage consumed adhering the pay-as-you- go paradigm. Photo sharing websites such as Facebook, Picasa-Web, and Flickr leverage from own cloud infrastructure and offer unlimited storage for less or no charge. Obviously pictures can be used to store information in, which has been used for steganography and watermarking at low data rates. We propose a general framework for storing large amounts of data, its data density and error-correcting mechanisms tunable to the properties of the photo sharing website of your choice. Our cost- performance-analysis shows that photo sharing websites compare favorably to professional cloud storage services such as Amazon S3. Thanks to the integration of our software as a backend to the widely-used jClouds framework, everyone can now use photo sharing websites as one component for low-cost purposes, including archival.

BaseX Tree View : Entwicklung einer datenbankgestützten Visualisierung von XML-Dokumenten

2011, Miller, Wolfgang
