“The future is ear” 1 : Infrastructures of “smart hearing”
This chapter discusses the growing intersection between medical hearing devices and consumer electronics to create both a new generation of hearing aids and new norms of self-controlled hearing. Questions arising from this convergence include: In what way the promised smart hearing is not only determined by technological and industrial standards, but they also respond to neoliberal circuits of consumerism and techno-capitalism? What are the effects and implications of ‘smart’ hearing technologies offering new functionalities that promise ever better hearing, fitness and well-being while, at the same time, shifting the responsibilities to the hearing subjects? What happens with the collected behavioral data such as biometrical information or activity protocols? And, referring back to (self-)control: Are there alternative possibilities beyond industry-led infrastructures, standardisation and protocols? In conclusion, we try to present possibilities to address these issues and reveal some of the contradictions coming along > that come along with ‘smart hearing’.

Introduction: Techniques of hearing : Histories, practices, and acoustic experiences
In 1907, the sociologist Georg Simmel alerted us to the “form-creating factors in the mere structure of our sensory function for the simple everyday relations as well as the complex circumstances of human beings”. Sensory techniques, as unfolded above, are closely linked to the concept of cultural techniques. The histories of hearing techniques that we wish to investigate are closely linked to the history of modern society. One of the most significant results of cultural and technological changes was the reformulation of the relationship between sound and space. The history of hearing techniques cannot be understood without hearing technologies that play a decisive role for “societal hearing”, but they also configure “normal” hearing and hearing impairment of the human individual. Enabling technologies, on the one hand, exceed a mere functionality or assistive appropriation of a technical object as they enlarge the personal usability and participation.
Twitching Laborious Play or : How Game-Streaming Changes Modes of Playing
The twitch gaming event is a multifaceted and multilayered participatory act, linking economic interests of platform owners, game industry and gamers with modes of playing games – a development that engenders gaming – especially twitch gaming – as a new form of ‘work’. In this paper, we will make an effort to develop a frame by which the interconnections between actors like media specific aspects of live-streaming, the aesthetic of performing – such as ‘self-portrayal’ and maintaining a ‘screen persona’ by the streamers –,mediatechnical equipment as well as social interactions with the audience and, last but not least, economic interests become entangled to produce what we call a ‘live-streamed gaming event (Giddings 2008)’ or, to put it simple, twitch.
Kulturwissenschaftliche Disability Studies
Der Beitrag stellt die kulturwissenschaftlichen Disability Studies in drei Schwerpunkten vor: Erstens aus der Perspektive einer kritischen Revision des sozialen Behinderungsmodells, zweitens im Rahmen der Ko-Konstituierung von Medien und (Nicht-)Behinderung und drittens im Kontext (selbst-)kritischer Disability Studies. Im Ergebnis eröffnen die kulturwissenschaftlichen Disability Studies ein pluralistisches Denken von (Nicht-)Behinderung jenseits von Homogenisierung und identitärer Einschließung.
„Bündel von Orakeltechniken“ : Ein Gespräch mit Erhard Schüttpelz über Trance und Kybernetik
In dem von Beate Ochsner und Robert Stock mit Erhard Schüttpelz geführten Gespräch geht es um die Verflechtungen zwischen Kulturanthropologie und Kybernetik. Dabei stehe vor allem die kritische Würdigung der von Schüttpelz als „Mystifikation“ bezeichneten Fähigkeit der Kybernetik zur Debatte, allgemeingültige Denkmodelle ein „conceptual scheme“ – zu entwickeln, wie sie sich nicht nur in der Medienwissenschaft häufig als wegweisend erwiesen haben. Beispielhaft wird der Aufsatz „Some components of socialization for trance“ von Gregory Bateson diskutiert, der in einer kybernetischen „Einkleidung“ diametral entgegengesetzte Zuschreibungen wie „Besessenheit“, „Ekstase“ oder „Marionettenkörpers“ zu strukturieren vermag, indem er von einem Verwirrung stiftenden unterdeterminierten Grundvorgang ausgeht, dessen Deutung bzw. Zurechnung immer erst zu erlernen ist. Die fundamentale Beunruhigung ist dabei genau das, was ein Medium von einem Werkzeug unterscheidet, nämlich die Fähigkeit, in der Situation einer Vermittlung multiple Situationen der Zuschreibung wie auch Situationszuschreibungen zu eröffnen.
