Based on hierarchical analyses of the latest World Values Survey (2005–08) and national statistics for 28 countries, we assess both individual and contextual aspects that influence an individual's perception of different social groupings. Using a social tolerance index that captures personal attitudes toward these groupings, we present an institutional theory of social tolerance. Our results show that specific institutional qualities, which reduce status anxiety, such as inclusiveness, universality, and fairness, prevail over traditional socio-economic, societal, cultural, and democratic explanations.</dcterms:abstract> <dc:date rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#dateTime">2020-10-15T13:24:18Z</dc:date> <void:sparqlEndpoint rdf:resource="http://localhost/fuseki/dspace/sparql"/> <dcterms:isPartOf rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/rdf/resource/123456789/42"/> <dc:creator>Freitag, Markus</dc:creator> <dcterms:available rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#dateTime">2020-10-15T13:24:18Z</dcterms:available> <dc:contributor>Freitag, Markus</dc:contributor> <dc:language>eng</dc:language> <dc:contributor>Kirchner, Antje</dc:contributor> <dspace:isPartOfCollection rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/rdf/resource/123456789/42"/> <dcterms:title>Crafting tolerance : the role of political institutions in a comparative perspective</dcterms:title> <dc:creator>Kirchner, Antje</dc:creator> <dc:contributor>Rapp, Carolin</dc:contributor> <dcterms:issued>2011-07</dcterms:issued> </rdf:Description> </rdf:RDF>
