Arguably, the emergence of this holistic viewpoint may never have occurred without the development of a crucial molecular technique, 16S rDNA gene amplicon sequencing, which allowed microbial communities to be easily profiled across a broad range of contexts. A diverse array of molecular techniques are now used to profile microbial communities, infer their evolutionary histories, visualise them in host tissues, and measure their molecular activity. In this review, we examine each of these categories of measurement and inference with a focus on the questions they make tractable, and the degree to which their capabilities and limitations shape our view of the holobiont.</dcterms:abstract> <dc:language>eng</dc:language> <dc:creator>Mead, Oliver</dc:creator> <dc:contributor>Moya, Aurelie</dc:contributor> <dc:contributor>Robbins, Steven</dc:contributor> <foaf:homepage rdf:resource="http://localhost:8080/jspui"/> <dc:creator>Strugnell, Jan</dc:creator> <dc:creator>Voolstra, Christian R.</dc:creator> <dc:creator>Ying, Hua</dc:creator> <dc:creator>Boote, Chloë</dc:creator> <dcterms:available rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#dateTime">2019-07-30T12:17:11Z</dcterms:available> <dcterms:rights rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/page/termsofuse"/> <dc:contributor>Whalen, Casey</dc:contributor> <dc:creator>Moya, Aurelie</dc:creator> <dc:contributor>Mead, Oliver</dc:contributor> <dc:creator>Whalen, Casey</dc:creator> <dc:contributor>Boote, Chloë</dc:contributor> </rdf:Description> </rdf:RDF>
